Open Letter / Dimension of Justice
Open Letter / Dimension of Justice
This painting is inspired by a work of Artemisia Gentileschi entitled “Judith Slaying Holofernes”. This work can be interpreted in a number of ways, though Gentileschi was accomplished in portraying strong women. The dark color palette matches the mood of the work, which is severe. The delicate line work juxtaposes the broad, gestural, sweeping motions throughout the painting that give a sense of movement to the arm holding the sword. Swords represent the air element, which symbolizes mental capacities, thinking, and rational thought.
The painting is 30” x 22.25”, Oil on paper. Arches Oil Paper is archival and makes for a unique painting surface with a beautiful deckled edge, which can be highlighted in the framing process.
