Tomboy (Study)
Tomboy (Study)
This painting is inspired by Céline Sciamma’s 2011 film “Tomboy”. This past year I’ve resorted to cinema for so many references to my paintings. Even though the world is opening up again, it’s felt like my experiences have been somewhat limited, closer to home, less extravagant, or simpler, held in familiar places and company. Movies allowed me to feel a sense of expansiveness and novelty as my world remained largely unchanged. I remember when the pandemic started, learning that movie theaters had closed felt like there was no longer a place I could go to watch someone else’s dreams. Though selecting stills from films I’ve watched in the past year, I’m reflecting on that experience, and for a short time, feeling what it’s like to live in a dream other than my own.
